While Nick and Maggie search for the killer, Monica struggles to connect with a veteran who was shot in the head in Vietnam.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

About MURDER IS PATHOLOGICAL (Maggie Ryan 1969)
"[Carlson's] work offers a unique combination of empathy for her characters, her sense of history, and her ability to weave the social and political currents of the '60s and early '70s into the stories." –– The Drood Review of Mystery
"The vandal is elusive. When at last the mystery is solved, the conclusion is stunning."––The Armchair Detective

MURDER IS PATHOLOGICAL excerpt 2 (269 words):
Actor Nick O’Connor goes undercover as neurology lab janitor, 1969.

            Nick tried to relax, but his mind kept gnawing at problems.  The troubling fate of the man whose bed he now occupied.  The welcome Maggie had given him, and the abrupt rejection.  He had to find out why.

            Was he really any better off now than he had been this morning, as her friend?  Their feelings were in the open now; that was a step forward.  And, forced to choose between banishing him by exposing his disguise, or allowing him to help search for the truth about  Norman’s death from this peculiarly useful position, she had chosen to let him help.  Things  could–– maybe–– come to a happier resolution than the one this afternoon.

            They’d better, he thought, to make up for these weeks of cleaning up rat shit.

            Like all buildings at night, the lab made its own secret noises.  A steady hum, probably the air supply.  Overlaid on that, little creaks and rustlings.  Made sense, the building was filled with mice and rats, hundreds of tiny intelligences.  Nocturnal animals, at least wild ones were.  Maybe these tame ones were also at their peak now.  Unlike Nick, who was thoroughly groggy.  Through a crack in the curtains, he could see scattered stars against the velvety country sky.  The weather had cleared, except for little, smudgy clouds blowing across part of the sky.  The stars came and went behind them.  Odd.  He flicked the curtains a little further apart, and realized what was happening.  The smoke from this building was drifting on the light wind.  The incinerator.

            God, thought Nick, I’m sleeping in a crematorium.

            But he did sleep.

 Did the Vietnam war affect people like your characters differently from the more recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan?

          Two things seem to me to be especially important in the effect of the Vietnam war.  First was the universal draft.  Every young male drew a number, and had to show up when it was called.  There were exemptions, for men with disabilities, for college students (until they graduated), for national guard members, etc.  But any young man of that age, and all his friends and family, knew that he could be sent to fight.  So the war was much more immediate to many more Americans than the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.  Today, with an all-volunteer military, the friends and family of active-duty US soldiers are not spread through the population, especially since the need for more troops is now met only partly by new recruits.  It’s also met met by many soldiers who had expected to go home at the end of their tour, and are forced to stay for another one, or two, or more.
          The other big difference was television.  In the sixties and seventies most Americans had TVs, but there were only three important channels, not the hundreds available now.  So when the nightly news came on, the choice was NBC, ABC, CBS, or PBS, and the newscasters saw their jobs as straightforward reporters of facts, not of political opinions.  War reporters were not embedded in US military units, and were free to investigate whatever they thought needed investigating.
          Of course the full experience of war, the horror and heroism and fear and friendships and betrayals, is impossible to boil down to a few minutes in a newscast in any era    But at least families in the US could see every night that people–– including Americans they might know–– were suffering and dying in Vietnam.  Today’s TV audiences can insulate themselves from what’s happening on the ground.

Finding Her Dream Book Blast and Giveaway

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Jennah will be awarding a $10 Gift card (to the winner's choice of e-book retailer) to a randomly drawn commenter via the Rafflecopter at the end of this post. It wasn't until she watched her best friend find the man of her dreams that RayAnne Hill realized there was a part of her missing. She knows the empty space can only be filled by finding her own true love, complete with kids and the white picket fence. Fear of letting someone in stops her cold, and it's much bigger than just finding Mr. Right.

James Shaw moved away from Kentucky and the family business to chase his own goals, settling in the small town of Kimmswick, Missouri. His business is succeeding, now he's ready to complete his life with a wife and kids. One night, one look and he's found her. RayAnne is everything he's been searching for.

As hard as James has fallen for RayAnne, can he be enough to help her overcome her worst nightmare? Or will he decide he can't wait forever, and walk away to find happiness?

Now enjoy an excerpt:

“I’m sorry, Ray.”

What? She whipped around to face him. “Why?” she squeaked.

“For that night. For being late. For letting you down. All of it. I hated not getting to spend some time with you.” James clasped his hands in front of him. Her gaze lingered a little below his belt. He cleared his throat and she jerked her head up. At seeing his smirk Ray’s cheeks warmed. She’d been caught.

“I should be apologizing to you, James. It was wrong of me to ignore you. I was being selfish, too worried about myself and how much I wanted to have dinner with you. Everything ended up okay, right? I mean I know it’s been a while, but…” she trailed off. Rambling would get her nowhere.

James grinned. The cooling fire inside ignited once again. “Yeah, sugar. Everything’s good. Shadow was perfect and her foal, Levee, is a beauty.”

“Levee? That’s an odd name for a horse isn’t it?”

“Maybe. I don’t care. She’s named after the Levee Apple Pie at the Owl.”

“Why would you name your horse after an apple pie?” Ray didn’t know much about horses, but she figured an odd name like that had to have a story.

“It’s not the apple pie. Once upon a time I met this girl and I screwed up. So this was my way of reminding myself what can happen if I don’t pay attention.”

Rose can't stand one more person meddling in her business, even if that person is a handsome, eligible sheriff. She's been controlled for far too long. When two unexpected visitors arrive with secrets of their own, Chance Creek must brace for its deadliest night ever. Can Cab figure out the connections between all the mysteries fast enough?

Or will Rose and her friends pay the ultimate price?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt 3
Cab shifted, distracting her. He was so close. Too close. She had sat at one end of the couch and expected Cab to take the other end, but to her surprise he sat down right beside her. And since he was probably a hundred pounds heavier than her, he put a significant dent in the cushion that left her sitting on an incline. As much as she tried to hold her ground she kept sliding toward him.
He shifted again and she slid some more until their thighs touched. Rose held her breath, aware of the man beside her in a way she wasn’t sure she’d ever been with Jason. His long legs, encased in faded jeans, played havoc with her nervous system. Everything about Cab was masculine and it made her want to melt against him. In the early days she must have felt something similar for Jason. Now when she thought of him she didn’t feel a thing.
She felt something for Cab, though. Touch me, she thought at him. Go on. Touch me.
He shifted a third time and she found her cheek nearly pressed against his arm.
“Hello,” he said, looking down at her and chuckling, his voice a low rumble.
“I’m not trying to make a move on you. I just keep sliding,” she said.
“Well, come here, then,” he said, and she shivered in anticipation. What did he have in mind? He lifted his arm and wrapped it around her shoulders, pulling her even closer. “Comfy?”
His voice, a sexy murmur, shot right through her. “Um… yeah,” she said. She was comfy. She could hear Cab’s heartbeat where she leaned against him. Slow and steady. Strong. She let out her breath in an uneven sigh. She wasn’t sure what they were doing here. She might not be making a move, but it sure seemed like Cab was.
She wished he would. Kiss me.
He brushed his fingers down her arm and laced them between hers, and for one heart stopping second she thought he would bend down and kiss her. Instead, he sighed, tugged her ring gently and let go of her hand.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Life is not the same for Jon Bartolo. He’s a dedicated lawyer, living in the town of Conway, New Hampshire. His days are spent helping his clients with their struggles and his nights are spent in agony, lost in a world between life and death.

His mother, who died three years ago, lurks in his house, suffering from a curse for eternity, without a resting place.

A smoldering fire between Jon and Krista ignites almost immediately, however, he’s sure his secret would frighten a woman away. An afternoon escape brings them closer, but doubts linger between the love-struck couple.

How will Jon’s  mother find eternal rest so he can move on with his life? Is he bound to a life of hell on earth?

Will Krista fit into his world when he learns about her past?  Could she be hiding a bigger secret? Is it possible for them to open their hearts to love? Could  a touch of Night Magic be just what this couple needs?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Steadying herself, she stood back and stared into his eyes. As Jon moved in again and plunged his tongue deep into her mouth, he lightly brushed his hand across the back of her hair, and she surrendered to his touch. It was as if a long lost lover had reappeared and claimed her heart’s desire. There was no telling what might happen next. Her whole body relaxed as he nuzzled her ear, teasing her with playful nips at her neck. All rules had been broken, but it didn’t matter. His hard shaft rubbed up against her stomach, and she swayed back and forth, unable to break away from temptation. His breathing sped up and his strong arms were tight around her back. She quietly moaned, lost in another world. Every movement brought her one step closer. Am I that lonely? I’m about to have sex with a man I just met. As his hand trailed across her back, her body rocked with his.
Each touch was electrifying, as if he wanted to devour her, and she found herself in a trance-like state. Is this what I’ve been missing? Running her hand across his firm bicep, she felt woozy. The warmth of his body was raising her level of arousal. Here in the middle of his office, she experienced a passion like no other. Everything seemed right. Lust took control of her senses and she let herself go with it. With each kiss he cradled her in his arms, his embrace warm and protective like a warrior of love. How did this happen? Had she found the man she was destined for or was it all a dream?
The Cowboy Wins a Bride Super Book Blast and Giveaway
THE COWBOY WINS A BRIDE
by Cora Seton
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

All Jamie Lassiter wants is to marry his best friend's sister and settle down for the rest of his life in Chance Creek. He's saved his money, bought into the Cruz Guest Ranch and he's ready for that wedding, but Claire Cruz is nowhere to be found.

Claire's too busy leaving Montana behind to care about cowboys or their wedding plans. She's got plans of her own - a trip around the world. She'll go as soon as she buys her tickets and she doesn't care if she ever sees Chance Creek again.

Desperate to change Claire's mind, Jamie proposes a bet: give him six weeks to convince her to marry him. If he can't, he'll pay for her round-the-world tickets himself.

Claire can wait six weeks if it means free tickets and a chance to get a little revenge on a man who once broke her heart. She's got only one stipulation: Jamie can't touch or flirt with her - or any other woman - while the bet is on.

Now Jamie's on the run from a bevy of cowboy-groupie ranch guests, and Claire's learning she cares about the ranch - and Jamie - more than she dreamed possible.

Maybe it's time to lose that bet.

As long as Jamie loses it first.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt 3
Ethan tugged her closer. “Stop it – you’ll hurt someone with that fake smile. Why didn't you just say yes to Jamie? You could be as happy as I am. Wait a minute – are you wearing his ring? Did you say yes?”
Claire gaped at him, her eyes stinging once more. She couldn't believe Ethan was in on this joke and would carry it to such an extreme – on his wedding day. She and her brother had their spats over the years, but he'd never been cruel. She opened her mouth to tell him so, but he pulled Jamie into a man-hug, pounding him on the shoulder.
“Congratulations! When's the happy day?“
He was in on the joke, wasn't he? But he was doing an incredible job acting like it was real. She couldn't remember ever seeing Ethan this happy – especially not since their parents' deaths.
“Labor Day,” Jamie said emphatically and grinned at her, daring her to deny it.
She looked from one to the other, at a total loss for what to do.
“You're getting married?” Autumn shrieked, grabbing her hand and pulling it close to see her ring. “Oh my gosh, Claire – it's beautiful. I'm so happy for you!” She threw her arms around Claire and gave her a stifling hug.
This can't be happening, Claire thought, waiting for Jamie to tell them it was all a joke – waiting for Ethan at least to let Autumn in on it. Her stomach twisted when she realized both of them were going to play it straight. Ethan was beaming, and Jamie…he looked like the cat who'd swallowed the canary.
Damn it, she wasn't a helpless bird.
But as she turned to set Autumn straight, her new sister-in-law cupped her hands to her mouth and called out, “Everybody! Everyone – can I have your attention? Yoo-hoo!“
The crowd immediately quieted, all eyes turned to the bride.
“I just have to share the happy news – I'm so excited!” Autumn's face was flushed and her eyes shining. She pointed to Claire.
“Wait…” Claire began, but Autumn rushed on.
“Claire and Jamie have just gotten engaged – they're getting married on Labor Day, so everybody better save the date! We'll all be right back here in a couple of months to do this all over again.“
As the crowd cheered and clapped, Claire turned to Jamie, begging him silently for help. He just threaded an arm around her waist and kissed the top of her head. As people surged in to offer their congratulations, she once more pasted a happy expression on her face.
She would be a laughing-stock when September rolled around and no wedding took place.
If she survived this day she would never speak to any of them again.
ABOUT THE BOOK: Alice Grantham lost her fiancĂ© and her job, so she’s had to come home to Willow Park to live with her parents. To recover some sense of independence and security, she’s cobbled together different part-time jobs, including one as assistant to the pastor of her hometown church. Nothing seems to be going right for her. Even Micah, the pastor’s brother and the first boy she ever loved, is standoffish with her now.
Micah has always been a prodigal son, but now he’s trying to put that lifestyle behind him. Then a five-month-old daughter he never knew existed is dropped on his doorstep, the result of one of his many one-night stands. He needs help from Alice to care for his daughter, but he can’t let himself hope for anything more from her than that. He can’t help but want it, though…
Enjoy an excerpt:
“Well, how is it supposed to go?” Micah demanded. “Don’t you know how to work a car seat?”
“Why would I know? I’ve never had a baby. You’re the one who’s supposed to be mechanically inclined. Why can’t you figure it out?”
“I sure wouldn’t have designed this ridiculous contraption in a way that’s impossible to hook in the car.”
“Oh, wait,” Alice gasped, remembering something she should have recalled earlier. “I think it’s supposed to face the other way.”
“That can’t be right.” Micah turned the carrier as she’d indicated. He was bending over into the car, and he looked just as hot and frustrated as she felt. “Why would they make the poor babies look at nothing but the back of the seat?”
“I don’t know. Maybe it’s safer or something. Let’s just try it. Maybe the belt goes through like this.”
Micah fed the belt through the grooves, and the buckle got stuck at one point. “Shit,” he muttered, trying to free the belt. “Shit.” Then he glanced up at her. “Sorry.”
“You don’t have to keep saying sorry,” she replied, slightly snippy. “I’ve heard worse, you know.”
“I know that. But do you really think I should be teaching her bad language this early?”
“She can’t even talk yet.”
“Well, she can hear.”
“Fine,” Alice grumbled, tilting the carrier slightly to make room for Micah’s run of the belt. “Watch your language then.”
He gave her a cool glare, but it changed when Alice was able to snap the seatbelt closed.
They both tested the carrier to make sure it was stable, but they couldn’t get it to move more than an inch, no matter how they tugged on it, so they assumed it would do for the short ride to Micah’s house.
Alice sighed in relief as she finally climbed out of the car and walked around to the driver’s side.
Micah was leaning against the car, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. He looked exhausted, defeated somehow.
Despite her annoyance just the moment before, she felt another pull of sympathy. She reached out to put a hand on his shoulder. “It’s going to be all right.”
“Is it?” he asked, opening his eyes to meet hers.
“Yeah. We’ll figure this out. We don’t know anything yet.”
“But what if she’s mine? What if her grandparents really doesn’t want her? What if I’m the only parent she has? I can’t even manage to get her strapped into the car.”
During his investigation, Scarsdale is forced to navigate between the crosshairs of two police commanders out to get him. She is hiding a secret, one that could not only cost her a job—it could end her life…
Dani hides a deadly past. After her daughter was brutally murdered, Dani exacted her revenge then changed her name and fled to Austin. But if her secret ever gets out, she knows there is no place she can hide from the murderer’s vicious family.
Pulled into a web of malice and deceit, Scarsdale and Dani discover the value of breaking the rules. Then just when they thought things couldn’t get worse…they do.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt Three:

Scarsdale trudged into the courthouse, flashing his badge so he could bypass security. He stopped at the rear of a throng of people maneuvering to get an elevator. He checked to see where the four elevators were—one was stopped on floor three, another just arrived at the fifth floor and two seemed stuck on Eight. People elbowed their way closer to the doors—even he got jostled. A distinct odor of alcohol, mixed with cheap perfume and a trace of marihuana, made him sneeze a couple of times.

Looking around, Scarsdale didn’t recognize anyone connected with his dreaded hearing. He leaned against the wall and let his thoughts drift. The events of the past five years flashed through his mind. The wedding Marcy refused to attend. Then Charity’s funeral—the second time Marcy had seen Shannon since she was born—gushing over her granddaughter, telling Shannon how much she missed her. Scarsdale stopped outside the big wooden courtroom doors. He stared at the brass door handles. What will the judge decide?

His heart hammered against his chest. Taking a couple of deep breaths and swallowing hard, he pulled the courtroom doors open.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Interview:
1.  First, tell us about yourself - where you live, your family, and those sorts of details.
My home is in the Austin, Texas, area with my truly wonderful wife. I’ve worked as a law enforcement officer and criminal investigator and am a licensed attorney with experience in criminal prosecution and defense.
2.  How long have you been writing?
       I’ve been writing fiction since 2010. Prior to that, I wrote plenty of legal briefs, motions and police offense reports. A number of opposing counsel and defense attorneys considered some of those to be fiction.
3.   Do you have a favorite place to write Price of Justice?
      I do all my writing in my home office. It has an outside view- great for creating setting, and a quiet environment well away from distractions.
4.  Why did you decide to write Price of Justice?
     I wanted to tell a story about two people, one motivated by a work ethic and the other by grief, and how they worked toward a common goal but from opposite ends of the legal spectrum. It was a scenario I’d seen both as a police officer and as an attorney.
5.  Who is your favorite character in your book and why?
     It didn’t start out this way but after the book was finished and I looked back on the story, I’d have to say my favorite is Dani Mueller. She endured a lot of heart-ache, grief, fear, and did a lot of soul-searching.
6.  How about your least favorite character?  What makes them less appealing to you?
     My least favorite character in Price of Justice would be the guy known as the CEO. He was a psycho who bullied others and preyed on the innocent and helpless for profit.
7.  Do you proofread/edit your own books or do you get someone to do that for you?
     I do several revisions and edits on my own but after all the self-edits are done, I have someone else go through it - a fresh set of eyes.
8.  What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
     I’m an avid fan of certain TV shows such as The Blacklist, The Originals, Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and most recently Bitten.  I love going places and doing fun things with my wife, like going to The Melting Pot for dinner or to the Austin Aquarium, or a really great movie. When football is in season, I have two teams I pay close attention to.  I also read a lot of crime and legal thriller books.
9.  Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?
     I bought myself a Nook and read every morning over a cup of coffee and many times in the evening. The authors I’ve read the most are Michael McGarrity, John Sandford, and Michael Connelly. Recently Andrea Kane, Jeffery Deaver, John Grisham, and John Lescroart are making the list.
10. What question do you wish that someone would ask about your book, but nobody has?  Write it out here, then answer it.
      Question:  Why did you write the character of Dani Mueller in 1st person  point of view?
        Answer:  Since the story deals with two people after the same goal but from different ends of the legal spectrum, I wanted to have a clear contrast between the protagonist detective and Dani Mueller. Having Dani tell her own story allows the reader to see things as she saw them and be in her head. As such, in my opinion, it then creates a closer bond between the reader and the character. Some reviewers have commented that they really enjoyed her character.
Tara Buck has always been the good sister, level-headed by comparison to Scarlett, her flaky, impulsive twin. But when Tara learns her fiancĂ© has been cheating on her with one of his school students, the orderly world she’s created for herself suddenly feels as if it’s falling apart. For years she chose the safe option, but from now on she’s going to live a little, stretch her wings…be a little daring. And if that means acting on the long-suppressed feelings she’s always had for Reid Dalton, then so be it!
Reid has wanted Tara from the moment he met her, but she’s always been out of bounds. Not only is she his patrol partner at the Bozeman PD, she’s also engaged. But then her relationship blows up, and Reid finds himself battling his own instinct to stake his claim with the finest, hottest woman he’s ever known.
Even if anything did happen between them, it would only ever be temporary - Reid’s a born wanderer, while Tara’s roots run deep in Marietta. So even if things are good between them, it seems their romance is destined to be short and sweet...
Tara’s twin sister, Scarlett, also has a Spring Brides story: look out for Second Chance Bride by Trish Morey. Details from montanabornbooks.com
Now enjoy an excerpt:
Reid Dalton pumped gas into his GMC pickup, one ear tuned to the conversation going on between his friends inside the truck. Grant was giving Brett a hard time for missing an easy layup during the basketball game they’d just finished, and Brett was serving it straight back at him with both barrels.
Reid grinned to himself, feeling pleasantly tired after an hour of charging up and down the court, trouncing the Bozeman Fire Department team. The informal competition between the police department and the firefighters had become a regular thing over the past few months. Reid wasn’t sure which part of their weekly matchups he enjoyed the most—the rapid-fire pace of the game itself, or the inevitable shit giving and taking that occurred afterward.
“You want to know my opinion?” he asked as the pump clicked off, signaling the tank was full.
“Not particularly,” Brett said, which earned him a guffaw from Grant.
“You both need to lift your games. Drink less beer, run a few more miles,” Reid said.
Grant made a rude noise, while Brett gave him a one-fingered salute. Reid was still laughing as he headed into the gas station to pay the cashier.
Then he saw the couple exiting the motel next door to the Gas-And-Go Mart and his step faltered.
The girl he didn’t recognize, but she was young and blonde and clinging to her man as though her very life depended on it. Reid watched as Simon Garfield said something before kissing her in a way that left no doubt whatsoever as to the nature of their relationship.
Damn.
Just... damn.
Tara would be devastated.
For a moment he was frozen as he absorbed all the implications of what he’d just witnessed. Tara had been planning the wedding for the past few months and as her patrol partner, there was precious little Reid wasn’t privy to. Like the fact that Tara and Simon planned on having the reception at Le Petit Chateau in Bozeman, and that Tara was limiting her attendants to just her twin, Scarlett, and that today she had an appointment at Marietta’s one and only bridal salon to pick out her wedding dress...
Belatedly he glanced back at the car, hoping the other guys hadn’t seen, but they were both frowning, staring out the windshield at the sordid little drama unfolding in the parking lot next door. There wasn’t a doubt in Reid’s mind that they recognized Tara’s fiancĂ©. They’d all attended the engagement party Tara and Simon held back in February.
Reid mouthed a four-letter word.
What a nightmare.
