From the Outback: A Visit with Ann B. Harrison

LIVING IN AUSTRALIA

Hi Dana, thank you so much for having me. I love sharing my beautiful country with anyone who will listen.
I moved to Australia over twenty years ago with my family after my DH sung its praises repeatedly and wore me down. It was the country he had hitch hiked around in his surfing days and the place he wanted to bring up his family. Yes, I wanted to see the sun every day, the constant drizzle in New Zealand was getting me down. Yes I wanted to dig my toes in the sand of the beautiful white beaches I drooled over on travel shows.

The chance to cuddle up to a koala was too good to miss, to have a snake crawl around my neck filled me with excitement. Yes, I'm sad, I know that but I can't help it. I love animals and here was my chance to get wild with them.

We landed with a suitcase each and not much else. Of course I fell in love with the wide open spaces, the contrast between desert and striking coastline. Who wouldn't? And it's all fodder for this authors over active brain! I don't like to write about somewhere I haven't been, so I get to travel to small outback towns for research. That's what I tell myself anyway. It also gives me the chance to view the landscape as my characters would. Here is an example in From the Outback when Sami finds a quiet moment to herself.

From high up on the horse’s back she could appreciate the farm in a way that melted her heart, pushing away the stilted boundaries she held close in case of hurt and disappointment. The freshness of the green valley was a balm on her soul and she breathed deeply, letting go of even more stress. This farm was hers, it was time she realised it and relaxed enough to enjoy it.

I'm definitely a country girl at heart. I've always lived on a decent block of dirt and had animals because that is who I am. When I wrote From the Outback I discovered another part of Australia. The beautiful wine region of The Hunter Valley. There was no way I could say no to DH when he suggested we leave the desert and make our home in the rolling green hills liberally covered with wineries. To me, it seemed like the perfect place to call home.

But seriously, what isn't to love about the country I now call home? We are a prosperous nation in more ways than one. We believe in having a fair go, giving a mate a hand and not backing down without a fight. Everyone has the chance to excel and the only thing stopping them is themselves. I think I made the right move all those years ago. If you had your choice to move to any country in the world, where would you go?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Four:
Her mind reeled at his closeness, a sensory world of heat and touch. Of sinful thoughts. Concentrate. Stick with the plan.
What plan? This had been a spur of the moment idea. Now she had to make it work.
A flurry of nerves and fear coiled tight in her gut. This man was big. Her gaze dropped to his hands. Big hands. Hands that could break her with one flick of his wrists.
Tess knew she tempted him, which was exactly as it needed to be if she were to succeed. Then he did something she hadn’t expected. He lifted a hand to her neck, scraping the back of his fingers along its curve. Her breath hitched for a heartbeat.
Do it, Tess. He’s your only hope.
“I desire the independence of a married woman,” she said in a rush.
His eyes darkened to the color of the deepest night sky. “And?”
The tip of her tongue slid along the rim of her mouth, and butterflies fluttered in her stomach. “Marry me, Aiden, and you’ll never see me again. Marry me, or I will announce to the world your penchant for robbery.”
His hand fell away, his expression instantly stony. “You are either very brave, Tess Stanhope, or extremely foolish.”
“I know what I want.”
“So do I.”
Then he kissed her—and that changed everything.
Ruby Heart Virtual Book Tour
Ruby Heart
by Cristelle Comby
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

When elderly client Doris Hargrave informs private investigator Alexandra Neve that her beloved antique ruby heart necklace has gone missing for the second time in a period of over sixty years, Alexandra knows this is no ordinary jewellery theft. The ruby heart is a family
heirloom and the only thing that connects an ailing Mrs Hargrave to her parents, who were murdered during the Holocaust.

To solve the case, Alexandra and her business partner, blind history professor Ashford Egan, must sift through obscure Holocaust documents to find out the truth. It’s that way that they learn of a secret World War II-era love affair which could hold the key to all the answers they are looking for. Meanwhile, Egan is under immense pressure from the university to quit his private investigating business, and Alexandra is afraid that a man she trusts will leave her. Again.

When Alexandra begins to receive anonymous threats and her flat is vandalised, this all becomes personal. Knowing that there is someone out there to hurt her, Alexandra vows to find that elusive ruby heart if it’s the last thing she ever does.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Three:
I close the lipstick, drop it in the door pocket, then look back at the rear-view mirror and check my blond wig one last time. ‘I wouldn’t want to be doing all this for nothing.’
Egan ignores my comment and asks, ‘What’s your plan?’
‘Well, Mrs Hayder said her husband has a type when it comes to women—’ I tug at the wig a little ‘—I’m doing my best to fit the description.’
‘Which is?’ he asks, and I don’t need to look at him to know he’s smiling.
‘Tall, blonde, sexy and exotic.’
‘Exotic?’ he asks.
I frown at my own reflexion. ‘I hope Italian will be exotic enough for him. I’m not sure I’m able to use any other accent convincingly.’
‘I’m looking forward to that part,’ Egan chuckles, tapping the little earpiece he’s wearing. ‘And you’re really certain he’ll want to have a drink with you?’
‘In this dress?’ I ask. ‘I assure you he most definitely will. I’m going to go all Monica Belluci on him — he won’t know what’s hit him.’
‘Monica Who?’ he asks.
‘She’s a well-known actress. She’s all curves and very popular with the male population… some of the females too.’
Egan chuckles as I open the door and step out.
‘Just don’t miss your cue,’ I say, closing the door behind me.
I walk the length of the car and cross the street. There’s a bar on the other side, snuggled in-between two large office buildings.
I wobble on my heels and have to force myself to take slow measured steps. Porca vacca, it’s easier to walk in a straight line after hitting your head against a wall, than when wearing ten-inch heels — trust me, I’ve tried it.
First Position Super Book Blast
First Position
by Prescott Lane
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

Emory faces life’s challenges at the one place that’s never failed her, the ballet barre.  But even the barre can’t steady her when fate brings her face-to-face with her old college flame, Mason, who’s hoping to return to the NFL after a career-threatening injury.  Before they can surrender to their sexual desires and find salvation in each other’s arms, they need to come to terms with their past.  Mason must confront the demons that have set him on a path of self-destruction, while Emory must decide whether to keep her painful secrets locked away, or expose them and risk losing the love of her life.  But nothing can prepare Mason for what Emory has kept hidden, or the possibility that he himself may be to blame for the very secrets she keeps – and why they continue to haunt her.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Two:
Emory sat between Olivia and Wesley, as three nail technicians worked on their feet.  “This is the best idea you’ve had in a while, girl,” Wesley said, wiggling his toes in the water.  “Thanks for inviting me.”  Emory pointed to Olivia giving her credit.
“She told me about Tomás, and honey, there’s nothing better for a broken heart than hitting the spa.”
“Thank you, Olivia, I’m feeling better already.”  Wesley leaned his head back, easing his mind.  “We’re not just doing feet, huh?”
“We’re doing it all!”  Emory said, giggling.  “Manis, pedis, facials, massages, and Olivia, you’re getting your hair and makeup done for our shoot.”
“We deserve it all,” Olivia said, “for all the shit we put up with from our men.”  Wesley and Emory nodded in agreement, but then Olivia turned serious.  “But what I really need is a wax.  Must be a damn forest down there by now!”  Wesley and Emory, along with the technicians, erupted in laughter.  “Was that inappropriate?”
“No way,” he said.  “I come here once a month to take care of that area.  They have this hard wax they use.  Hurts less.”
Olivia appreciated the tip.  “I might try that.”
“Too much information, Wesley,” Emory said.
“Whatever, it’s not like I said she should vajazzle herself.”
Emory hid her face, mortified, regretting she’d allowed Wesley to come, but Olivia was intrigued.  “Is that popular in Charlotte?  It seems all the Texas housewives are doing it.”
Wesley quickly asked, “Emory?”
“I wouldn’t know,” she said, then apologized to the technicians for her friends.
“Oh, come on,” he said, “we ballerinas are all bare down there.  You can’t have more than a landing strip.”
“I prefer Brazilian,” Olivia volunteered.
Emory turned bright red.  “Someone help me!”
Good Faith Book Blast
GOOD FAITH
By
Liz Crowe
BLURB:
Strong personalities—volatile marriages—stressful careers—conflicting goals—difficult children.
Contemporary challenges facing close-knit families form the crucible that forges a new generation.
Brandis, Gabriel, Blair and Lillian emerge from the entanglement of their parents’ longstanding emotional connections, but one’s star will burn brighter – and hotter – than the others.
With a personality that consumes everyone and everything in its path, Brandis Gordon struggles to maintain control as he ricochets between wild success and miserable failure. His life proves how even the strongest relationships can be strangled by the ties that bind.
Brandis and Gabe Frietag are as close as any brothers, bound by both loyalty and fierce rivalry. The strength of their ultimate alliance is tested time and again by Brandis’ choices.
Companions from birth, Blair Frietag and Lillian Robinson share loner tendencies, but come to rely on each other through adolescence. As they mature, both are forced to confront their feelings for the men they knew as boys.
Somewhere between the tangle of good memories and bad, independence and addiction, optimism and despair, the intertwined destinies of the new generation finally collide, leaving some stronger, others broken, but none unscathed.
As a chronicle of three families navigating the minefields of teen years into the turbulence of young adulthood, Good Faith holds up a literary mirror to contemporary life with joys and temptations unflinchingly reflected. Its fresh, real-life voice portrays the sheer volatility of human nature, complete with the hopes, dreams, and unexpected setbacks of marriage, parenthood and “coming of age.”
Excerpt 2
Blair dropped back on the bed and shut her eyes forcing herself to recall happier moments, better times. “You’re so laid back,” her father used to say to her when she still paid attention. “So relaxed.” He would smile as she worked alongside him in their kitchen. While the restaurant irritated her, she used to adore cooking with him, just to the two of them, and baking made her the happiest. “I wish I were more like you.” He’d flick flour from his fingers at her making her giggle and flush with happiness at his attention.
Later, he would accuse her of being “detached” and not willing to have any kind of confrontation even to defend herself. But who cared what he thought? She rolled to her side, picking up her phone as it buzzed with a text.
Hey loser, Brandis had sent. She frowned at the tingle that shot down her spine. She deleted it, determined to ignore him. About ten minutes later, he sent another one. You there?
She sighed and opened her laptop, thinking she’d do some English homework. Her cat jumped into her lap, its usual spot whenever she sat at the desk. The long Saturday stretched out in front of her, endless, boring, and useless. Typically she didn’t mind being alone, treasured her privacy and the time to read or take long walks. But the last few months had been different, frustrating beyond belief as she couldn’t seem to settle or relax, to enjoy herself like she used to.
Stupid adults. Stupid fathers and their stupid marriage-busting assistants. Stupid mothers and their mealy mouthed blindness to the whole thing. The phone kept buzzing with messages. And she kept ignoring it, something in her holding back, preserving herself from the sucking vortex of Brandis Gordon. She didn’t like texting him. It made her feel awkward, forcing conversation via a few tapped out words on the phone.
Finally, the phone rang. She sighed and answered it. “What?” she said, her hands shaking with the effort not to launch into a conversation with him. Flirting simply did not come naturally to her. She had no idea how to handle herself around boys, much less the huge, giant, hulking presence of Brandis—football quarterback, high school super stud, and one-time friend. Other than to settle herself with memories of him, of them, as kids, when things were simple.
His seeming addiction to their strange, late night conversations had confused and thrilled her in equal measure. And she missed them. A lot.
“You are one hard girl to get hold of,” he said, softly.
“What do you want, Brandis?”
“I thought we were gonna stay friends. I mean, we talked about it, after….”
She winced, wishing she had her brother’s willpower when it came to Brandis’ all-encompassing, some would say, suffocating, personality. “He’s a goddamned drain, an energy suck, a…shithead,” Gabe had said to her, a few days after their huge fight. He’d been sporting a black eye and a split lip from the altercation. A terrible, embarrassing moment for everyone concerned—one that signaled the end of her childhood, best she could tell.
“Why? What did he say to you?” Blair had begged her brother to tell her. They were close, and she had no qualms asking him. But he’d pressed his lips together, and threatened her with all sorts of dire, brother-inflicted consequences if she even talked to the guy again. So, she never knew.
Brandis had been on the phone to her within hours, pleading with her to intervene for him, to talk to Gabe, to get him on the phone. She’d enjoyed that moment—when Brandis needed something from her. But it faded, as did his efforts to try to make up with her brother. She’d heard a lot about him lately—drinking, smoking pot, hard partying on every level while still remaining quarterback, and in top, nearly model-perfect physical shape. And of course, all the girls, many of them older, who flocked to him.
“Blair?” he asked, interrupting her aggravation at the thought of all the females he must have screwed. She knew about the “college girls weekend.” Gabe and Brandis had laughed and joked about it enough in front of her. It made her nauseated with jealous fury and headache-y with embarrassment at her own virginal self.
“What?” she said again, getting up to pace. “Why do you keep trying to talk to me? We have…nothing in common anymore. You have plenty of girls to talk to. Leave me alone.” She slid down the wall next to her door, her knees weak, like they always got, at the sound of his deep, rumbly voice.
He’d been a fixture in her life, on vacations, at holidays, camping and fishing in the summer with their dads, going to baseball and football games, just…her friend. The kid with the funny laugh, shock of jet-black hair, and snapping blue eyes who attracted trouble and deflected it with equal equanimity. She had no idea when she’d become aware of him as a compelling member of the opposite sex.
He’d changed almost overnight, developing a sarcastic streak, a bit of meanness with his endless practical jokes one of which ended with his own sister’s broken wrist. During those strange years, she would catch him staring at her, his eyes dark, puzzled, confused. And when she’d smile and try to draw him out of it he’d blush, run or bike away, usually yelling something about “stupid girls.” And almost always with her brother Gabe in his wake. Anger lit her brain. “Seriously, Brandis, what do you want from me?”
“I want to be your friend still. That’s all. I…miss you guys.”
“Well then I guess you shouldn’t have said whatever you said that day.” She looked up at the ceiling, willing him not to give up, to stay on the line.
“I know,” he said, then got quiet. “How is he,” he asked after about thirty seconds.
“Fine. Busy, working at The Local, playing soccer, hanging with Lillian.”
“Wow, Lilly-G?”
“Yeah, I guess.” Blair stretched out on her soft rug, propped her feet on the wall, and settled into the conversation. “My mom’s been going out on dates. It’s stupid.”
“Well, your dad did….”
“I know, I know.”
She heard a shuffling sound as if Brandis were getting comfortable on his end. “And you? How many boyfriends for you now, Miss B?”
“Please.” She blushed. “Boys don’t notice me. I’m a sophomore. I don’t play sports or do anything cool really.”
“You play a mean game of Scrabble. I miss that. And I have yet to find a Euchre partner as good as you.”
She bit down on the urge to invite him over, to eat popcorn, watch a movie cuddled up on the couch like they used to do. But she knew things were altered. Now that “Brandis, the super stud,” had emerged he would never be “Brandis, Blair and Gabe’s friend” ever again.
“It’s a good thing you aren’t dating,” he declared out of the blue, making her blush again. “That way I don’t have to beat up any punks, you know, who think they can get anywhere with you.”
“And what makes you think my dating anyone means anything else is happening, hmm?”
“My sweet and innocent Blair, boys want one thing on a date. And it is not the concept of a good movie or a nice meal. Don’t ever forget that.” His voice lowered a bit, making her shiver.
“I guess you would know, eh stud?”
“I, um…I don’t know. Sometimes I wish….” He trailed off.
“What? That you could walk around town without bumping into some girl you’d ‘dated’? That you didn’t have so many pissed off ex-girlfriends floating around? That you would occasionally go a weekend without getting drunk and screwing your way through a party?”
The silence spilled into her ear like smoke. “Sorry,” she muttered, meaning it.
“No, it’s okay. I won’t deny it.” A bit of a swagger had snuck into his voice. “Popularity is my middle name.”
“I thought it was Robert. You know, after my dad? Same as Gabe’s?”
“Oh, right. Got me there. Listen, Blair, I gotta go. I just…wanted to hear your voice.”
Aggravation gripped her and held tight. “Why, Brandis? I don’t party. I don’t know how to kiss boys or…anything else. I’m a bookworm, a geek, a science nerd. I like to be by myself, and I don’t run in a pack of popular girls. Hardly worth your time I’d say.” Her face flushed, and she had to put her feet back on the floor to keep her knees from knocking together.
“Guess that’s why I love you,” he said with a voice so soft she thought he might be talking to himself.
 “Spare me,” she scoffed, suddenly needing to be off the phone. Something about him felt suffocating and needy. While she figured herself for a caretaker, a conflict avoider, someone who liked keeping things simple but wanted the people around her to be happy, suddenly she sensed danger in letting Brandis worm his way any farther into her heart. “Bye.” She hung up, quickly and sat for nearly an hour clutching her phone and calming her racing pulse.
Through the Oracle's Mist Book Blast
Through the Oracle’s Mist
by Aedan Byrnes
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

In the blackest night, with the moon and stars to guide him, she would always be there waiting…

Cyrenna thought she died the day she watched Tynan and his brothers jump through the banishment portal in an act of solidarity with Rigor. Little did she know, it would be the first of many deaths she would experience in her quest to claim his heart. She would surrender not only her immortal soul, but a mortal one repeatedly. Through a deal with the great Oracle, she has multiple mortal lifetimes to change the direction of her future and have a chance with Tynan.

Her journey spans the ages from the GenPei War in Japan and the Silk Road west, to Cromwell, the Three Kingdoms and modern times, bringing her one step closer to forever until she makes a misstep. Then, the burden falls to Tynan. The only thing that is absolute is her fervent hope that he will come, but there’s one big problem.

Through it all, he doesn’t so much as know her name.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt Four:
I had a choice to make for all of us. I needed to make it now. There was no time to wait or to confer. Letting go of my brother’s arms, I tried to convey that there was cause as the five of them eyed me like I’d lost my mind. Maybe I had. I would have to be perfect to do what I was planning.
Sending up a prayer for Amarus to guide me, I shifted to other on the court floor before the god and the gallery of spectators. Throwing my weight forward, I slammed into Rigor’s back, knocking him forward to kneel at the god’s feet. I held fast and shifted back as quickly as I was able. I could only hope that it would be enough, and that Amaranos would understand. As we knelt before him, the room electric with shock, I said the only thing I could get out that might be enough.
“Please.”
Excerpt 3:
“Of course, why wouldn’t you? You’re beautiful and smart, and perhaps with a few lessons, the perfect young lady for any gentleman to be happy to have as his wife.”
Isabel beamed at her sister. She always knew the right things to say to make her feel loved. A husband? Wouldn’t that be something? She closed her eyes and wondered what it would be like to be kissed, really kissed by a man. The only man she’d been around for most of her life was Mr. Condiff and half the time, he had ignored her.
“Isabel, are you listening?”
Isabel’s eyes popped open and she felt a blush rise up her neck. “Sorry, I was merely thinking about the possibility of attracting a husband.”
Georgette nodded. “I understand, but please pay attention. A lady’s most important accessory is her fan. Use it to give yourself a few moments to think of an appropriate response should a gentlemen come over and speak with you. It would not do well for you to blurt out the first thing that comes to mind.”
“Are you saying I’m too bold?”
“Maybe a little,” Georgette said.
Isabel stood and placed her teacup on the tray and hurried up the stairs. “I’ll be right back,” she said over her shoulder.
When Isabel came back into the parlor with a white lace fan, she saw her sister was frowning.
“Isabel, what are you doing?”
“I’m following your advice. Shall I practice for you?”
Georgette couldn’t help but smile. “Yes.”
Isabel set out to practice every scenario she could think of. “Miss Knott, it is a pleasure to meet you,” she said in her best imitation of a low, manly voice. Fanning herself, she batted her eyes and replied, “Thank you, sir. And who are you again? I’m so busy fanning myself that I completely forgot your name.”
Her sister’s laughter filled the front parlor. “Isabel, you’re shameless.”
“I know. Shall I demonstrate more?”
Before Georgette could answer, Isabel played out scene after scene entertaining her. She was laughing so much that tears rolled down her cheeks. “Stop, you must stop. I can’t breathe anymore,” Georgette begged.
